UNDERSTANDING NATIVE ART

It was in Barcelona that I did these drawings.

Having visited British Columbia for the first time at the beginning of the nineties I was enchanted by the First Nation art and of course, a visit to the Museum of Anthropology made me fall in love with everything I had seen there. At that time I knew very little about Bill Reid and it would take almost twenty years to get to know Toni Cavelti, who was very close friend of Bill’s, to find out much more about Native art of the North West Pacific Coast. Only then, I realized that the drawings I did in Barcelona had nothing to do with a profound meaning and connection with the land that First Nation artist convey by making their art and that the aesthetic layer is just one small part of it.
